Service plans

Currently STACKIT uses only high-quality SSD hard disks in the Block Storage Service, which results in very good performance.

The provision of inexpensive HDD hard disks is also planned for the future. The distinction between the hard disk types can be made on the basis of the naming:

  • Standard → HDD
  • Premium → SSD

Block Storage is offered in multiple performance classes. All of them are available both for Single Availability Zone (Single AZ) and Metro Availability Zone (Metro) setup.

Single Availability Zone (Single AZ) setup implies fixed assignment to one Availability Zone. Data in a Single AZ are not mirrored across different Availability Zones.

Metro AZ setup means fixed assignment to a region, but no fixed assignment to an Availability Zone. Data in Metro Setup are automatically mirrored across two different Availability Zones.

Performance class is defined by performance characteristics, in case of Block Storage it is a combination of IOPS per second and throughput per GB. Performance class is independent of the volume size and can be applied to any available capacity.

While creating a volume you can select a performance class.

Currently available Service Plans (performance classes)

Section titled “Currently available Service Plans (performance classes)”

The following table lists currently available performance classes for the EU01 region:

IOPS - Input/Output Operations per second

Throughput - Throughput in Megabytes per second

Thus, the classes used can be distinguished in detail based on the naming. Example: “Block Storage Premium - Performance Class 2” corresponds to SSD hard disks with max. 1000 IOPS and max. 100 Mbyte/s throughput.
