You can follow this guide to get started with Core networking. You learn how to create a Virtual network, assign a floating IP address to a ressource and how to configure firewall rules, so that you can reach your ressource over the internet.

  • Create a Virtual Network
  • Order and attach a Public IP address
  • Configure a Security Group
  • Attach the security group to your server
  • Test the connectivity

At first you need to create a Virtual Network:

  1. Log in to the STACKIT Portal .
  2. On the left click on Network and on the new page on Create network.
  3. On the new pane leave everything untouched and just enter a name.
  4. Click on Create to create your Virtual Network
  5. Wait for the network to reach the Created state.

To give your hosts and services the opportunity to be reached from the internet directly, you need to order Public IP addresses. In this guide we will use a Public IP address attached to the target ressource directly.

  1. On the left click on Public IP and on the new page on Create public IP.
  2. On the new pane select your existing server and click on Order fee-based.
  3. After creation copy and paste the address into a text editor.

To make your server reachable, you need to define a Security Group.

In this guide we want to access port 22/TCP on our server. In a real world scenario it is advisable to make port 22/TCP only available on secured networks. To create a Security Group with port 22/TCP open from the internet, follow these steps:

  1. On the left click on Security groups and on the new page on Create security group.
  2. On the new pane enter default-server as group name and click on Create.
  3. Click on the new list entry and in the new pane on the right click on Create security rule.
  4. Enter the details of your new rule:
    • SSH ingress as description
    • TCP as protocol
    • Incoming as direction
    • Enable Any source
    • 22 as start-port and end-port
  5. Click on Create.

After creating the security group, you need to attach it to your server. Follow these steps:

  1. On the left click on Server and click on the target’s server’s entry. You reach the detail page of the server.
  2. On the left click on Network and on the submenu on Security groups.
  3. On the top click on Attach security group and select your newly created security group default-server. Click on Attach.
  4. On the security group’s default entry click on the three-dots-menu and click on Detach and confirm on the overlay with clicking on Detach again.

In order to test the connectivity to your server, open a Terminal or SSH client on your workstation. For this step you need the Public IP address, you pasted into your editor. In this example we use 188.34.72.65. Replace it with your address.

Terminal window
ssh 188.34.72.65
