pfSense is an open source ngx firewall appliance with the option to plug-in features.

In this guide you get to know how you can setup and install a pfSense firewall on STACKIT.

Usage

In this example the pfSense firewall is placed as wan gateway and is handling:

• outgoing connections (nat)
• vpc routing
• firewall (packet filter)
• vpn gateway

Not in scope of this guide is the enablement of DNS and DHCP.

These services are handled by OpenStack if you want to transfer the services to the pfSense firewall you need to disable them in your OpenStack project first.
