Create and manage virtual networks

This guide explains how to create, manage, and delete Virtual Networks in the STACKIT Cloud. It includes prerequisites, IPv4 configuration, DNS settings, and important considerations for STACKIT Network Areas (SNAs) and public projects.

Prerequisites

• You have a STACKIT customer account: Create a customer Account
• You have a STACKIT user account: Create a user account
• You have a STACKIT project: Create a project

Create a Virtual Network

1. On the pane on the left click on Network. You can find it in the Networking section.

2. Click on Create network

3. A new pane opens. Fill in all information. At first decide whether you want to specify a IPv4 prefix length or enter a network in CIDR notation.

   Enter a descriptive and individual Name for your Network.

   Enter a network name and either specify the prefix length or a network address in CIDR notation. In SNA projects your specified prefix must be part of a network range defined in the SNA, for public projects you can use any IP-range defined in RFC1918.

   When you define a prefix length, the network address is auto generated.
   What is the IPv4 prefix length? The IPv4 prefix lenght is equal to the network mask and defines the size of your Network. Networks in PUBLIC projects will be subnets of 10.0.0.0/8, Networks in SNA-Projects will be subnets of network ranges defined by your SNA-Administrator. For more informations about SNA check STACKIT Network Area (SNA).

4. Defining DNS servers is optional and will override the defaults if set. In public projects the defaults are 1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8 and 9.9.9.9 and in SNA projects your SNA administrator can define the default. If no DNS server is defined as a default you will receive a warning that this may result in connectivity issues. You can define up to 3 DNS servers.

   Information about DNS Name Servers The DNS name servers of your network are used to resolve public hostnames.

5. Click on Order fee-based or Create.

   Informations about fees The monthly fees are only charged for the first network you create in a project. The amount does not change, regardless of how many networks you create.

6. Wait for the new network to reach the status Created.

Edit a Virtual Network

1. On the pane on the left click on Network. You can find it in the Networking section.
2. Click on the Network you want to edit.
3. In the overview of the Network you can click on Edit to change the name of your selected Network. Furthermore you are able to edit and/or add up to 3 DNS Name Servers.
   Information about DNS Name Servers The DNS name servers of your network are used to resolve public hostnames. The 3 name servers 1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8, 9.9.9.9 are set by default for public projects if not otherwise set.

Delete a Virtual Network

1. Delete all resources which are attached to the Network.
   It is not possible to delete a Network with attached resources!
2. On the pane on the left click on Network. You can find it in the Networking section.
3. Click on Delete in the options menu of the network you want to delete.
4. Confirm the action by typing the Name of your Network in the text field.
5. Finally, delete the Network by clicking on Delete.
